Pianist George Cables, who is included in the pantheon of the greatest jazz pianists, has always humbly seen himself as part of the rhythm section, always emphasizing the group over the soloist. Equally skilled as a leader or as a sideman, he helped to define modern mainstream jazz piano of the 1980s and ‘90s. In the 1960’s he gained recognition playing with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard. He also became known as Art Pepper’s favorite pianist. Cables has recorded over 30 albums as a leader and has performed or recorded with Max Roach, Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie and many more. For this show he was joined by bassist John Webber and drummer Victor Lewis.
