The Dmitri Matheny Group performs in the Jazzbird Lounge at The Ravenscroft. Celebrated for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, American musician Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). Born on Christmas Day, 1965 in in Nashville,Tennessee, Dmitri was raised in Georgia and Arizona. Attracted to his father’s collection of jazz and classical LP records, Dmitri began piano lessons at age 5, switched to the trumpet at age 9, and took up the flugelhorn at 18. Matheny attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, then the Berklee College of Music, Boston, graduating magna cum laude in 1989. After private studies with Carmine Caruso in New York City, Matheny became the protégé of the legendary Art Farmer, a formative relationship that lasted over a decade.

The audience could not have picked a better way to get in the mood for Valentine’s Day than an evening with “boss tenor man” Houston Person, aided by the extraordinary trio of Mike Kocour on piano, Chris Finet on bass and Lewis Nash on drums at The Nash Jazz Club.

Houston Person specializes in making music that is uplifting with strong recognizable melodies that make you feel happy and want to dance. His relaxed style is reminiscent of the great Ben Webster. Houston is known for his long-time association with legendary vocalist Etta Jones as well as more than 75 albums as bandleader. He is known as the patriarch of The Jazz Cruise on which he has performed every year since its maiden voyage in 2000.

Wayne Shorter, saxophonist, composer and true master of unparalleled genius, pushed jazz to new places for 60 years. Wayne was the musical director for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, player and composer for Miles Davis and founder of the jazz fusion band Weather Report.

Fred Forney and his quintet played Wayne Shorter - Re–Imagined at The Nash Jazz Club which featured brand new fresh arrangements of Shorter’s music including Speak No Evil, Infant Eyes, Children of the Night, Footprints, Elegant People, Ana Maria and more.

Toronto native Andrew Rathbun is widely esteemed as one of the most creative and accomplished saxophonists, composers and bandleaders of his generation. On tenor and soprano saxophones he has achieved a rare depth of lyricism, authoritative swing and compositional intelligence. Recording steadily as a leader since the late 1990s, he has documented his stirring original music with an array of extraordinary lineups, featuring the talents of such greats as Kenny Wheeler, Billy Hart, George Garzone, Phil Markowitz and Bill Stewart. “Rathbun’s lines dance and glide,” writes David Whiteis of JazzTimes, “reflecting both childlike wonder and well-honed artistry.”
